Dia de Muertos @ Maria Luisa Gastro Bar

it never ceases to amaze me when i find a tradition taken to the next level…
the day of the dead is a well known mexican tradition that seems exotic and bizarre for foreigners,
but here, it is a necessity… a way of life; to celebrate the death.

filled with mysticisms and symbols, decoration may seem overdone…
however, in my eyes, this place found it's balance.
something they do, and do it well is the abstraction of the essence
taking it to a new context without missing in translation…

ok, let's place the cards on the table [pun intended]
they had a special event prepared for the day…
the menus [life and death; in the cards the cempazuchitl flower represents between the vegetarian
and the meat options] were created around the ingredients
the pre-hispanic tradition with a new [and unexpectedly delicious] twist.

e inesperadamente delicioso, giro.
the drink was a cocktail with a sugar skull, piloncillo and mezcal…
i can't with life, it was so good!

on with the tacos…
see, i am picky, very… i am probably the worst mexican human being, i don't like tacos…
maybe because i don't eat meat, but these!!! oh man, oh boy!
pumpkin flower tacos, with nopales!!! and a tequila hint sauce? i can die now.
[i didn't try the ones with the spicy shrimps but my friend said they were supreme]

and again with the surprises…
stuffed chiles in my personal experience don't tickle me fancy,
but all that was needed for me to get hooked on these was the different flavors and textures.
i will never ever see traditional food the same.

oh and the desert!!! pumpkin custard with nuts.
for my friend, the carnivore who had a chicken breast stuffed with pumpkin flower
over wild mushrooms [envy] he had a berry jam with pine nuts…
i saw his eyes pop when he first tried it, that was love.

with my beloved friend Andrés Diosdado
who is a hardworking key element in this city for a new paradigm shift…
